ABB and Sumitomo Corporation's Construction & Mining Systems SBU have entered a strategic partnership to co-develop net-zero solutions for heavy-duty mining equipment. This collaboration responds to surging demand from global miners committed to phasing out diesel fleets by 2050.
Leveraging ABB's 130-year mining expertise and Sumitomo's heavy machinery prowess, the initiative will tackle critical challenges in high-power electrification systems capable of withstanding extreme operating conditions while meeting international safety certifications.
"We anticipate breakthrough innovations through this deep collaboration in electrification technology," said Kenichi Hyuga, GM at Sumitomo. ABB Process Industries Division President Joachim Braun stated: "As technology leaders, we're exploring all pathways to enable leaner, cleaner mining operations."
Key Collaboration Areas
The partners will commence comprehensive feasibility studies immediately. "Our propulsion technologies already deliver 30% lower TCO," noted Edgar Keller, President of ABB Traction. "This alliance will further enhance these advantages."
With 12 major miners already enrolled in ABB's Carbon-Neutral Mine program, the partnership comes as the global electric mining truck market is projected to exceed $20 billion by 2030, signaling a transformative shift in industry operations.
