Siemens Energy and SSE Join Hands to Advance Hydrogen Energy Revolution: Aiming to Launch 600MW Hydrogen Gas Turbine in 2030 20 / 12 / 2024

Against the backdrop of the global energy transition, Siemens Energy and SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy) have jointly initiated a cooperation project named "Mission H2 Power". This project aims to develop gas turbine technology that can operate entirely on hydrogen, contributing to the achievement of net-zero emissions transformation and enhancing the energy security level of the United Kingdom. This cooperation is based on the two parties' long-standing and good cooperative relationship and focuses on promoting the green transformation of the energy industry.

Recently, Siemens Energy and SSE announced a joint investment plan of millions of pounds to develop a new combustion system that enables Siemens Energy's SGT5-9000HL gas turbine to operate at 100% capacity using hydrogen. This innovative technology retains the flexibility to use natural gas or any mix of the two fuels, providing cleaner and more efficient energy solutions for power stations. To support the development of this technology, Siemens Energy will establish additional facilities at its Clean Energy Center in Berlin specifically for conducting tests on large gas turbine technology.

Meanwhile, SSE's Kibide 2 power station in North Lincolnshire will be the first application site for this technology. As one of Europe's most efficient combined-cycle power plants, Kibide 2 will introduce a hydrogen hybrid operation mode to ensure its leading technology aligns with the future trend of net-zero emissions. This initiative will not only help SSE achieve its decarbonization goals for the power station but also provide important support for building a clean power system in the United Kingdom.

Siemens Energy has played a crucial role in this cooperation. As a leading enterprise in the energy industry, Siemens Energy has not only provided advanced gas turbine technology but also actively invested in research and development resources to drive technological innovation. By establishing additional facilities at the Clean Energy Center, Siemens Energy has provided robust support for testing large gas turbine technology, ensuring the reliability and stability of the new technology.

Furthermore, Siemens Energy has closely cooperated with SSE to jointly develop a plan for promoting the development of a zero-carbon hydrogen economy. Darren Davidson, Vice President of Siemens Energy for the UK and Ireland, said, "We are delighted to build on our existing cooperation with SSE and jointly develop a plan to promote the launch of a zero-carbon hydrogen economy. This cooperation is an example of our shared knowledge and joint efforts to ensure energy security."

As the "Mission H2 Power" project continues to progress, the cooperation between Siemens Energy and SSE will yield more significant results. According to analysis by national energy system operators, the UK's power system is expected to require around 7GW of low-carbon flexible electricity by 2035, with about half of this capacity needing to be provided by hydrogen-fueled power stations. Therefore, the next-generation Kibide power station, as an important part of the "Mission H2 Power" project, is expected to become one of the world's first large-scale 100% hydrogen-fueled power stations.

Finlay MacCartney, General Manager of SSE Thermal, said, "We are well aware that hydrogen-fueled power stations will be an important part of the net-zero world energy system. 'Mission H2 Power' will accelerate their promotion and application through excellent engineering technology. Our project is crucial for providing flexible backup for renewable energy."

In the future, SSE's Kibide factory will develop into a low-carbon power generation hub, operating in coordination with the decarbonized Kibide 2 power station and new power stations using hydrogen or carbon capture technology. With its Center of Excellence for Hydrogen in Leeds and world-class engineering teams, SSE is advancing full-value chain projects, including blue and green hydrogen production and large-scale hydrogen storage. These projects will provide indispensable support for building a clean power system and drive the decarbonization process across the entire industrial sector.

The cooperation between Siemens Energy and SSE not only demonstrates the two parties' determination and strength in energy transformation but also sets a new benchmark for the global energy industry. With the in-depth implementation of the "Mission H2 Power" project, we have reason to believe that a cleaner, more efficient, and safer energy future is approaching.
