The Changi Water Reclamation Plant, located on a unique diamond-shaped island in Singapore, stands as a pillar of Singapore's deep-water sewage treatment system with its 25-story pump station. This system bears the significant responsibility of purifying wastewater for the entire country, playing a crucial role in ensuring the circular utilization of urban water resources. Last summer, the NEWater production line at the Changi Water Reclamation Plant officially commenced operations, producing up to 50 million gallons of treated water daily—an amount equivalent to the capacity of 90 Olympic-sized swimming pools, showcasing Singapore's exceptional achievements in water resource management.

The Changi Water Reclamation Plant incorporates innovative space-saving designs, such as stacked treatment tanks and sludge treatment facilities, with all treatment facilities installed in a stacked configuration. This unique concept is a global first. However, as the project progressed, new challenges emerged, including achieving low maintenance costs, real-time communication, remote diagnostics, and integration with existing asset management systems. To address these issues, the project team decided to adopt PROFIBUS DP V1 as the communication protocol to meet mandatory connectivity requirements.

This decision posed new challenges, however. Since the Changi Water Reclamation Plant utilizes programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from both Schneider Electric and Rockwell Automation, enabling PLC communication with PROFIBUS DP became a significant hurdle. At this critical juncture, ProSoft Technology, leveraging its professional technical expertise, collaborated closely with Schneider Electric to successfully achieve PROFIBUS integration by introducing 160 ProSoft Technology PROFIBUS DP V1 Quantum modules. This breakthrough not only provided high-speed communication power for the overall system architecture of the Changi Water Reclamation Plant but also made the realization of a super-large network possible.

The incorporation of PROFIBUS DP V1 modules has not only enriched ProSoft's ProTalk Quantum module series but also opened up a new potential communication path for Schneider Electric. Through intelligent field device management (FDT/DTM), ProSoft Technology, as a third-party provider, successfully assisted Schneider Electric in integrating PROFIBUS device-level into its PLCs, further enhancing system compatibility and stability.

The Changi Water Reclamation Plant is currently equipped with 160 ProSoft PROFIBUS DP V1 master modules, which continuously communicate with terminal devices to ensure the smooth progression of the water treatment process. In the extensive PROFIBUS network, various field devices, including magnetic flowmeters, thermal mass flowmeters, pressure and differential pressure level transmitters, radar/ultrasonic transmitters, dissolved oxygen analyzers, temperature transmitters, and electric actuators, have been effectively integrated. These devices are sourced from renowned suppliers such as Siemens, Yokogawa, Vega, ABB, and Schneider Electric, collectively forming the powerful water treatment system at the Changi Water Reclamation Plant.

It is worth mentioning that the PTQ-PDPMV1, serving as the PROFIBUS DPV1 master, plays a pivotal role in the Changi Water Reclamation Plant. This module, developed based on Quantum backplane transmission technology, collects all necessary information on the PROFIBUS DP network through the Quantum processor and enables rapid firmware upgrades. This functionality not only enhances system performance but also allows for slave messaging, extended diagnostics and alarm handling, and notification functions, providing robust support for the efficient operation of the Changi Water Reclamation Plant.

With the successful operation of the Changi Water Reclamation Plant, ProSoft Technology's PROFIBUS integration solution undoubtedly sets a new benchmark in the global water treatment industry. In the future, this innovative technology is expected to be widely applied in more water treatment projects, contributing significantly to global water resource management and sustainable development.
