ABB Strengthens Leadership in China's Robotics Market with Launch of Three New Robot Families 07 / 07 / 2025

Shanghai, July 2, 2025 – ABB, a global leader in robotics and machine automation, has expanded its portfolio with three innovative robot families—Lite+, IRB 1200, and PoWa—to address the evolving demands of China’s advanced manufacturing sector. The launches, aligned with ABB’s “local for local” strategy, emphasize customized solutions, AI integration, and sustainable production at its Shanghai Mega Factory.

Product Highlights

Lite+ Series

Target: Essential material handling and pick-and-place operations.

Features: Compact design, user-friendly interface, and seamless integration with existing production lines. Ideal for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in electronics manufacturing.

Technology: Powered by the OmniCore™ controller platform, enabling AI, cloud, and edge computing integration.

IRB 1200 Series

Target: High-precision tasks such as arc welding, dispensing, and assembly.

Features: 20% lighter than previous models, with enhanced speed (5% faster cycle times) and precision. Available in 5–7 kg payloads and 0.7–0.9 m reach.

Applications: Automotive, consumer goods, and general industries.

PoWa Collaborative Robot

Target: Fast-paced, collaborative tasks like palletizing and machine tending.

Features: Industry-leading speed (5.8 m/s), no-code programming, and plug-and-play setup. Operational within 60 minutes of deployment.

Future Expansion: Initial 10 kg and 13 kg models to be by six variants (7–30 kg payloads) by 2026.

Technological Advancements

All new robots utilize ABB’s OmniCore™ controller, which reduces energy consumption by 20% and boosts speed by 25% compared to legacy systems. The platform supports AI vision algorithms and digital twin technology, enabling autonomous decision-making. For instance, PoWa’s generative AI-driven teaching software allows users to program tasks via “watch-say-do” workflows, simplifying automation for non-experts.

Localization Strategy

ABB’s Shanghai Mega Factory, a $150 million facility inaugurated in 2022, now produces over 90% of its robots locally. The Lite+ and PoWa series were developed by a 300-strong Chinese R&D team, reflecting ABB’s commitment to “In China, For China.” Sami Atiya, President of ABB’s Robotics & Discrete Automation division, noted: “China’s mid-market robotics segment grew at a 24% CAGR from 2021–2024. Our new offerings bridge the gap between accessibility and performance, empowering SMEs and emerging industries.”

Market Outlook

China remains the world’s largest robotics market, accounting for over 50% of global installations in 2023. ABB projects 8% annual growth in the mid-market segment through 2028, driven by demand from electronics, automotive, and green energy sectors. The company’s integrated ecosystem—spanning hardware, software, and services—positions it to lead the next wave of industrial automation.
